The books of the fairs
An engraved certificate completed in ink with the U.S. presidential seal is mounted on a blank leaf at front of volume. The certificate, signed by Andrew Johnson and William H. Seward and dated March 2, 1867, announces the official appointment of Abram S. Hewitt as U.S. Commissioner to the 1867 Paris Exposition. Opening lines of the certificate: "Andrew Johnson President of the United States of America, to all who shall see these presents, greeting ...."
Also inserted at front of volume: 1. A large folded plan, with caption: "Plan officiel. Commission impériale de l'Exposition universelle de 1867, Service du parc. Autographie et imprime par A. Jailly." 2. Letter written on Commission imperiale letterhead, from J. Maertitiy[?] to A.S. Hewitt, dated 9 Oct. 1868. 3. Engraved "diploma", dated 5 Jan. 1868, granting A.S. Hewitt 2 medals for services rendered to the Exposition universelle de 1867, signed by F. Le Play
Items mounted on blank leaves at end of volume: 1. A printed report in 8 columns on the Exposition by N.M. Beckwith, U.S. Commissioner General, dated Jan. 17, 1868; 2. Printed list of U.S. Commissioners to the Exposition; 3. Printed list of awards given to U.S. companies represented at the Exposition
Bookplate: The library of Sarah Cooper Hewitt presented in memory of her father Abram S. Hewitt and her sister Eleanor Garnier Hewitt
